Role

Centad’s work involves helping countries in South Asia pursue common developmental goals and harness the gains from trade. Towards this end Centad advocates for policy changes around trade and development in South Asia, with a specific focus on India, based on rigorous research analysis combined with grassroots experience. In its endeavour to facilitate development oriented trade policy in South Asia, Centad organises ‘South Asia Conference on Trade and Development’ annually. Climate change concerns was an integral part of the deliberations in the conference held in 2007, given the fact that the countries like Bangladesh, Maldives etc. are affected by the same.

Centad’s current emphasis in this area of research is to try to establish the interlinkages between climate change & sustainable development and its implications for a trade driven development policy. Our research agenda focuses on identifying gaps in current research endeavours. At a macro level, we propose to explore the interlinkages between international environmental law-climate change debate-technology transfer-trade policy-sustainable development with a focus on livelihood issues in South-Asia. We propose to utilize our South-Asia network of resource personnel and stakeholders comprising of research institutes, academia, government functionaries, media and civil society organisations to explore the aforementioned linkages.
